Audince feedback from initial ideas

We have created a power point presentation consisting the following, we will present this to the rest of the class, teachers and some family and friends. The feedback we achieve from this audience research will be used to improve the content and subject of our product. We will record the presentation and place it on the blog to see.

We showed the presentation to the class to assess and use their feedback. The response we recieved was all popular from all 3 ideas but 1 song stood out from the rest. This was the song 'Neon Trees - Your surrender' we beleive this to be most popular as the age of the class fits with the age we are attempting to target with the production. We agree with the majority of the class as well and on that basis we have decided to produce this film as our final video entry. The class was also very interested in the idea we have to follow a storyline within the product we are planning to produce.

Analysing Similar Products

Many promo videos stick to common recognizable conventions. Following common conventions helps the audience to relate the to the promo video and instantly recognize that it is a promo video. another feature of abiding by conventions of other products is that it has been tested and should theoretically be popular with the consumer.

However, some artist choose to create products that intentially break conventions to make them unique and stand out to the audience. This could consequently be risky due to the artist not knowing completely the consumer preferences.

Killers - Mr Brightside

The promo video above keeps to many well known conventions. The video contains many long shots, mid shots and clse ups this is done to enphasise the main artist to the audience. the movement of the artisits lips are syncronised to the lyrics of the song. the artist is also centered in most shots to add further enphasis to the consumer.

Camera Angles
The camera moves around to follow the artisit or band so the consumer can see the band/artist for most of the duration of the video, this is done by camera tracking, tilts, pans and crane shots.

Mise en Scene
The mise en scene in the video is thought about it  in great detail, the colours and props throughout are linked. The red and gold royalistic look is used to show power and wealth in the video. Aspects of the video show that it is set in the past as the clothing they are wearing is dated and brings a connection with the past. Power dressing is used along with cigars and statues to show there high social class to the audience. The woman are wearing huge amounts of unrealistic make up to signify the fantasy side of the product, they all look asthetically pleasing, this is also done to please the consumer and hold there attention.

Editing
The editing within the video is in timing with the music (same tempo) along with the movement of the singers mouth to the lyrics. Most change in the clips come from straight cuts to keep the audiece entertained and absorbed. At the end the final clip fades to black as it ends to represent the end of the video.

Killers Hot Fuss Album Cover

Front

Digipaks have to made to stand out to catch the audience attention so they are purchased. The front and reverse are usually simialar in style and colour. The front contains the title and a sometimes a relevant picture. The same font is used throughout and is the same colour, this is font is then often used inside the digipak, on the disk and even on the website.

Reverse

On the reverse the colour and style is continued aswell as the font. The tracklist is on the back to fit with common conventions traditionally used. With the tracklist is the barcode a picture of the band which challenges main conventions as the band are used pictured on the front, the record labels name and logo is also included.

Snow Patrol Website

Website conventions consist of many detailed and intricut aspects. As you can see above with snow patrols website the have used the same font style as on there album cover, this has been done so that the viewer can instantly see that the website is from the same producers as the album. This technique has also been used with the main colours (Black, White and red). Other main links from the digipak and the website consist of the font and the instantly recognizable snow flake logo symbol.

All shown below on the album cover.

Other main conventions of a music website consist of  links to other pages that show further in depth information about the band e.g. merchandise, tour dates, gallery, blog and home page. Other key conventions consist of a large title stating the artist or bands name, the copy right symbol and the names and logos of other websites that they are featured in.

Mood Board

My ideas for our promo video would be indie as this is the genre i am most familiar with. I believe i would be able to use the general conventions more easily as i will be able to stick to them easier when we produce the final product.

To stick to common conventions of similar media products we will try to include some shots which include the above as they are usually featured.

Promo Video, Digipak and Website

Promo Video

Our promo video will meet many main conventions of a promo video, the shots will focus on relevant aspects of the video each with individual purposes that should be aparant to the viewer. The change in camera shots will be made to match the tempo of the music. The purpose of the music video is to promote the song to a wide audience to enhance sales for the record label and increase demand/popularity.

The promo video is designed to tease the audience and provide them with a teasier. The promo video is used for promotional purposes. Promo videos usually match the mood of the music so the storyline reflects the action in the song.

Digipak

Our Digipak will consist of a main front cover that will be desngned to be eyectahcing and to draw in sonsumers to buy the product. The colours will be desingned to match the mood of the song we choose and will also be relevant. This will help to fit in with common conventions of similar products. The purpose of the digipak lets the audience know the content of the CD through the track list on the reverse, Inside the digipak there is more information in the form of pictures and maybe lyrics.

Website

We will try to keep many similarities between our website, Digipak and Promo video to keep a link between them, this is used commonly throughout similar products. Our website will be easy to navigate and clear, the fonts will all be common throughout all of out products. The website we make will include more detailed information about the band i.e. Tour dates, Merchandise, Lyrics and personal information about the band.

Initial ideas

We have many initial ideas that are at a un-developed stage and purely ideas being thrown around by members of the group. Some of the main ideas that are popular with everyone in the group are:

Coldplay - Fix You

This song is a hugely conventional song in structure, it contains strong emotional aspects which we hope to dwell on to draw in the audiences attention and emotional attatchement. We have listened to coldplay many times as we all appreciate there music hugely. We are hoping to use this to our advantage as we understand there conventions within both there songs and the music videos. I however am not as keen on the idea as Isaac and Joseph as i believe it is too well known and will have been attempted many times before.

Tears in heaven - Eric Clapton

We are all very keen on producing a highly emotional song as we believe it suits all of our best qualities as a group. This song is makes many people recall the death of the very popular Eric Claptons son.

We are, as a group wanting to produce an emotional film for our main piece however, we have as a group decided that this song is not for us as does not quite suit the style of music we are looking to produce. We believe that if we chose this song for our main piece it would not test us enough as the tempo of the music throughout the song is very low.

Killers - On Top

I personally really like this song and am very keen for our group to use in for our final piece. I think we could show our skills to our full potential with the high tempo and choruses within the song. The song has very meaningfull lyrics that would be good to make a promo video that follows the story.

This song would have faster cuts when it was edited to fit with the tempo of the song, it would not have the same emotional aspect that the other two songs aboive would provide.

Brief

For our A2 product this year we have decided to work on a promo video for our main piece. We will accompany this with a Website page and a Digipak for a CD package.

Our group remains unchanged from the previous year of Me (Luke Pitchford), Joseph Wright and Isaac Warburton. We have decided on this as we believe we worked well together last yeat and thoguht our final product was up to a good standard. Within the three of us we all have qualities that we can put into making our media piece the best we possibly can.
